Supplies needed to make DIY Valentine Mugs
Mugs
Cutting machine (I used a Silhouette CAMEO 3)
Permanent adhesive vinyl
Weeding hook
Scraper
Transfer tape
How to make DIY Valentine Mugs
Step 1: Create your design. I used this Heart Monogram Font from the Silhouette Design Store to make these. Then, cut your design.
Step 2: Because this design has some smaller elements that would likely come off the carrier sheet during weeding, I used reverse weeding. Cut around the outside edge of the design with scissors. Then apply a piece of transfer tape over the design, and smooth it with a scraper.
Step 3: Flip the vinyl over and carefully remove the carrier sheet, making sure you don’t lift any vinyl pieces.
Step 4: Carefully remove the outside excess vinyl, making sure the cut pieces remain on the transfer tape.
Step 5: Use a weeding hook to remove the rest of the vinyl pieces that aren’t part of the design.
Step 6: Apply the design to the mug with the transfer tape. Rub with the scraper to ensure the vinyl adheres to the mug.
Step 7: Carefully remove the transfer tape, and voila! Aren’t they so cute?
Note: We get asked all the time about how mugs with vinyl should be washed. We can’t say that they are truly dishwasher safe, but we have run them through the dishwasher and the permanent vinyl has held up beautifully in our case. You can also apply Dishwasher-safe Mod Podge to add another layer of protection, or I’ve heard of people using heat transfer vinyl on mugs to make them hold up extra well through washing.
Happy crafting!
