Valentine’s Day Crafts: DIY Valentine Village

We are big fans of creating intricate and adorable holiday villages for Halloween and Christmas, but realized that we left out one of the cutest holidays ever: Valentine’s Day! With its swoon-worthy (and sparkly!) color palette and adorable floral and heart-shaped details, you’ll be sure to fall in love with making these little villages.

DIY Valentine Village Ideas

One of the best ways to get started making a Valentine village is to look for inspiration. While this is our first Valentine village, we have a bunch of other holiday village projects here on the blog that you can scroll through to see the different methods we have tried!

Pinterest is also a treasure trove of holiday villages full of tiny details that make them unique.

Don’t overwhelm yourself by thinking you have to purchase a bunch of miniatures. Instead, look for ways to make tiny details by layering paper, twisting pipe cleaners, etc.

How to Make a Valentine Village for Valentine’s Day

There are many different surfaces you can use to make a Valentines Village. You could build them from paper, use upcycled cardboard, or you can use unfinished birdhouses like we did.

Whatever the surface, the best way to dress it up and make it full of color, pattern, and personality is to use a combination of Mod Podge and patterned scrapbook paper. We had so much fun mixing and matching our papers until we found the perfect combo. Then we found paints and embellishments to compliment the papers.

Watch us make our village on Instagram!

Supplies Needed to Make a Valentine Village

Step by Step Tutorial for DIY Valentine Village

Step 1: Trace the various surfaces of the bird house that you would like to cover with paper on the paper of your choosing. Then, cut out the paper using scissors.

Step 2: Using a paint brush, apply a moderate layer of Mod Podge to the first surface that you would like to cover, then place the paper on top. Use fingers to smooth any bumps. Repeat this process on each of the walls/roof pieces you would like to cover with paper. Let Mod Podge dry completely.

Step 3: Using your desired paint color, paint the surfaces of the houses that you would like painted. Let dry completely between desired coats.

Step 4: Make your desired embellishments for the house. We layered paper to make doors, windows, flower boxes and trims, and applied each with Mod Podge. We used pipe cleaners to make a garland and a wreath (and painted them with glitter paint), and we used faux flowers, ribbon, and wooden hearts to add extra touches. (Use a hot glue gun to attach any elements that aren’t paper.)

That’s it! Who wouldn’t want to come down to the love shack!?

Valentine’s Day Crafts for Kids: Valentine Stitching Boards

Stitching boards have been a major staple in our bag of tricks for as long as we can remember. They are great for a range of ages and help kids be creative while developing a range of skills. Our first set we ever made were these painted wooden boards that were pretty, functional, and a favorite with our kids. However, you don’t have to get out a power drill to make stitching boards–we made our latest set from a soda box!

What are fun Valentine’s Day Crafts for Kids?

These boards are such a great Valentine’s Day Craft because not only can your kid’s help make these stitching boards by cutting, painting, and punching holes in the cardboard, they can stitch a variety of designs, and stitch them over and over!

How to make a homemade Stitching Board Valentine card?

You can use these boards as a quiet activity, but we also love the idea of making them into Valentine cards. Write a note on a heart-shaped piece of card stock and hot glue it to the back of the stitched heart!

Supplies Needed to Make Valentine Stitching Boards

To make your own Valentine’s stitching boards you’ll want to gather cardboard that is thick enough to hold its shape while it is being stitched, but not so thick that you can’t cut it with scissors or punch it with a hole-punch. We found that a soda box was the perfect weight.

Once the pieces are cut and punched it’s so fun to let kids paint and design their own heart before the stitching begins!

For this tutorial, you will need:

Step by Step Tutorial for Valentine Stitching Boards

Step 1: Cut cardboard into hearts using scissors.

Step 2: Punch your desired designs into the hearts using a hole punch. (We did some around the perimeter, some in the center, etch.)

Step 3: Let kids paint the hearts in their desired colors. Let the paint dry completely.

Step 4: Cut a length of yarn and let kids stitch away, creating their own designs, or those you imagined!

Step 5: Remove yarn and repeat!
