DIY Painted Disco Ball Art
If you frequent trendy TikTok or Instagram you have likely started noticing disco balls or creations that are mirrored like disco balls EVERYWHERE. I’ve seen mirrored cherries, bows, hearts, and more, and I’ve gotta say, I love the idea of making life a little bit more of a party with this accessory.
How Do You Paint a Disco Ball?
One fun way we dove into the trend recently was by painting our own! I’m not much of an artist but found it to be pretty doable since it is mostly painting squares. I also found that by looking for inspiration of true artists around the internet I was able to make sense of where different shades of colors should go in order to give the illusion of light shining on the ball.
What is the Best Way to Paint a Disco Ball?
As a beginner and not much of an artist I needed to start with a canvas that already had the lines of the mirror ball drawn for me. (I found mine in a kit here that came with paint and a brush. I used my own craft paints because I liked the coverage better.) However, if you are more confident as an artist, you could begin by drawing the grid of the disco ball yourself, or even free-hand it as you paint.
I then used other disco ball art I’d seen online to determine where colors should be lighter and darker to mimic the unique surface of a disco ball. (This is a good example, or this!) I painted one ball where the light came from the side and another where the light hit the center of the ball.

How Do You Paint a Disco Ball?
Step 1: If you purchased a plain, round canvas without the printed disco ball grid, use a pencil to draw your grid. This is a helpful tutorial, if needed.
Step 2: Begin painting your squares. I found that the most essential part of making this project work was mixing paints. I started by choosing 5-6 paints and then mixed them together as I went to create lighter or darker shades and show the natural gradiant of the colors. Even though I only used a handful of colors, I ended up with tons of shades when I was done because I mixed the colors as I went for nearly every square.
Step 3: Once all of the squares are painted, let dry completely, then hang and enjoy!
